Lanyard

Lanyard has been in use for many hundreds of years.  In the old days it was a common tool to hand swords, knifes and even guns during battle. It was employed in variety of ways. Most commonly they are used for the purpose of insuring visibility and to keep something from losing. Sailors commonly refer to it as ‘rigging’ for securing sails. In context with projectiles it is referred to a cord tied with a hook at its end to be used for firing artillery or piece igniting fuse mechanism. The same is implied in air dropped bombs for pulling out the cotter pin and starting the firing mechanism. In terms of parachutes the main chord which has to be pulled in order to deploy the chute is also known as lanyard.

Background of Lanyard

The basic objective of this product is to keep things from losing in locations where there is a chance of dispossession. Originally they were used to keep the pistol, sword or whistles dangling with the uniform if the owner happened to lose grip over them. This made it a requisite part of the dress code of many armies and navies.

Later custom lanyards become a part of decorations worn on the uniforms. Even today the ceremonial dresses of military officers have it attached to them as a compulsory part often displaying their ranks and achievements. Over time lanyard transform it self as a widely used commercial item used by the office employees, students, staffs, sporting events as well as for controlling the identity during large events or trade shows. More often than not we see people making good use of lanyard to keep track of their electronics possessions such as cell phone, USB drive and even the latest and the greatest iPADS. A camera, mp3 player USB flash thumb drive or mobile phone is kept in safe custody by the use of lanyards. But electronics need to be designed so that they can use this helpful item. A simple hoop at any part of physical structure allows the lanyard to be used. This is in fact a continuation of the old tradition of keeping radios hanging around the shoulder. From time and time again we have learned to develop around a old tradition or commodity and invent new ideas around it or for it use.
